Sony gives us the first truly premium mini Android smartphone.
For quite some time now smartphone manufacturers has brought us miniature versions of their flagship models. However the likeliness to their bigger offspring has been limited to appearances only.
None of the so called mini smartphones offered has been anything but cheap cell phones wrapped as the flagship models. Finally though Sony is now offering a smaller cell phone specked like all the other flagship models like the Galaxy S4, HTC ONE and the Sony Xperia Z1.
If you love premium smartphones but hate how they won’t fit your pocket the Xperia Z1 compact is made for you.
Lets take a closer look at the specs that make the Sony Xperia Z1 compact such a powerhouse of a smartphone.
Sporting a 20.7 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front facing camera this phone is bildt to take excellent photos. We took the camera for a spin on our Sunday walk today, and we were utterly impressed with the results. You may already have read about the camera in the bigger sibling, the Xperia Z1. Thankfully Sony has used the very same one in the Compact version.
In the true spirit of the way that this phone was designed, the Z1 Compact uses the same CPU and GPU as the Xperia Z1. With its Snapdragon 800, Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 and the Adreno 330 GPU it is unlikely that you will find it lacking in this department.
With its 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage this phone does not separate itself from the other smartphone flagships.
Note that the phone comes preloaded with a few apps from sony, which together with the Android Os itself takes up about 4 GB of internal storage. This leaves you with around 12 for your apps, games, photos and such.
Apart from the obvious fact that the screen is smaller than other flagship models it also separates itself in another big way. This is a flagship model smartphone without a 1080P screen. The Xperia Z1 Compact has a 4,3 inch 720P screen with a pixel density of 342 pixels per inch. In everyday use we felt that the Z1 Compact was every bit as pleasing on the eyes as any other phone we have used. Even compared to the Galaxy S4 and the HTC ONE.
Sadly this phone has a non removable battery. Presumably this is done to make it less likely to take in water. It has a capacity of 2300 mAh, quite a lot less than other recent flagship phones. However we think that the smaller screen size will make the battery last about as long as the competitors.
Is it a good looking phone?
I would have to say without a doubt, yes. But it is not without its flaws. Even though the Glass and aluminium looks and feels premium in your hand, all the hatches and buttons look a bit out of place. Due to the fact that the back side is non removable this phone has no less than three hatches charging, micro SIM card and micro SD.
