Sony’s attachable lenses can be used with almost any smartphone

Sony’s attachable lenses can be used with almost any smartphone.

Even if both the Sony Xperia Z1 and the detachable lenses that was announced at IFA 2013 was leaked many times over, it was nonetheless very impressive.

Although we expected the two to be somehow connected, we did not guess that Sony would make the lenses so that they could be used on almost any smartphone there is. Instead of trying to make the DSC-QX100 a reason to buy either the Xperia Z1 or the Xperia Z, Sony has decided to make the lens work across cell phone brands.

While we suspect this makes Sony sell a little less of their top of the line cell phones, it is possible that the sales figures of the lenses more than makes up for this. Imagine if you could make a cell phone accessory that everyone feels that they has to have. The potential revenue would be through the roof. We now know that there are over 1 billion smart phones in use across the world. If Sony can tempt even 1 % of those to buy one, that translates into 10 million sold units.

Thanks to a special bracket the lenses should fit just about any smartphone there is.

Here you have the full specifications list of the DSC-QX100

  • F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens
  • Maximum aperture F1.8 – 4.9
  • 1.0 type Exmor CMOS sensor
  • 20.2 megapixels
  • BIONZ image processor
  • 3.6x optical zoom (28 – 100 mm)
  • Optical SteadyShot (image stabilization)
  • Optical SteadyShot Active (video stabilisation)
  • Multi terminal/ Triluminos color compatibility
  • Wi-Fi
  • NFC

How is Sony able to make a lens that fits all smartphones ?

They haven’t. What Sony has made here is a Camera that attaches to your phone making use of your phones screen and buttons to make the “camera” easier to handle. In fact the DSC-QX100 has a battery, a shutter button and a micro SD slot of its own. So you can even use it without the use of your phone. The drawback being you can’t see what you are shooting before uploading your pictures to a computer. It does not physically connect to any ports on your phone, but rather uses NFC and Wi-Fi to communicate with the phone.

Currently the lenses are not available as the launch date has been set to September 25, 2013.

  • DSC-QX100 – $498.00
  • DSC-QX10/B – $248.00

Maybe this could be this years perfect christmas present for the person who has everything, including a smart phone. ?

  1. I’m a blackberry fan, and there OS is by far the best, except one thing that I’ve never really been impressed by is there shitty 8 mp cameras on there phones. And these SONY cameras are way too big for what I’d want. If they had a low profile camera, maybe 20mp+, with a high quality focus, for ~$50 I’d definitely buy it.

  2. can i attach this lens to my ‘ HTC DESIRE SV (8mp)’?

  3. Interesting! Craze for smartphones is at its height. Each day, almost all mobile phone companies are coming up with a new smartphone. Now it is good to know that any smartphone can use Sony’s lens.

    Thanks for sharing

  4. I love the idea here. Perhaps smartphones need a common attachment standard for a lens like this?

  5. Jeminy Cricket says:

They’re going to have to price their lenses more competitively considering you can get an actual camera/smartphone for those prices…

    • That’s a really good point. I could be wrong but this seems like the kind of thing that appeals to more advanced amateur photographers (in addition to professionals), so $249/$99 seems like the sweet spot, at least for now. Once the high end lens is under $300, I will buy one for my mom.
