What happened to the Samsung Galaxy S5 menu button

For some reason Samsung decided that a task manager button was more useful than a menu button. Happily though the menu button is still there, you just have to know where to look.

The other day I stumbled across a reddit post where a user could not find the menu button on his S5. What made matters worse was the fact that the user was using an app that recognizes the device as having a menu button, so it did not display the onscreen button.

Since the onscreen menu button was not displayed and the user did not know how to access the hardware button he had no way of accessing the menu in the app.

After contacting support he was informed how this works on the Galaxy S5. Let me show you how.

  1. Press and hold the dedicated task manage button. ( situated in the area below your screen, to the left of your home button ).
  2. Keep it pressed for about 1 second and the menu will appear.
  3. Share this with your friends

  1. Thank you. Cured my issue. Hold the back button on the (right) and the settings menu shows. Thanks again

  2. Samsung Galaxy A5-6 says:

Anybody know where to find the menu button on a Galaxy A5-6 (2016) model.
It so annoying when you have an app with no menu option and your phone doe’s not want to help you out either. What smart cookie came up with the idea of removing/hiding the menu option. IDIOTS (Again… If it’s not broken don’t try fixing it)

    • I still cant find the menu button, I hate this phone, going back to iphone as soon as my contract is up so I can get a decent price on the phone.

  3. It worked. REALLY thanks!

    • Ahmadreza, you said it worked for you. You mean , the menu button. When I press and hold the menu button I don’t get a menu. I get the 3 main screens sort of in smaller window versions, but I don’t get a menu button. I am running 6.0. What is the difference please between what you are getting and what I am getting? Thanks.

  4. hi i have galaxy s5 i cant get my contacts on sim card says:

my galaxy s5 do not display contacts on my sim card

  5. Hi,
I have an S5 neo and have been frustrated with no menu/options button too :-(
I have your trick to press and hold the left hand button, but it just changes to spilt screen. Please could someone help?

    • Hey, on the S5 Neo you have tohold down the ‘back’ button on the left, not the task manager button. Hope that helps!

      • enrico ferrari says:

Not quite. On S3 Neo (NEO!) you don’t have back button on the left, but on the right, and it deoans’t work as you say.Open Sky Map on a S5 Neo (NEO!) and try to find the menu with the search function. No way, holding the back arrow key on the right pops up the desktop screen with the widget available. No menu button at all. On any screen holding the back button on the right gives the same pop up.

      • Omg thanks for adding the neo quirk. WHY do these companies NOT just allow users to choose button functions like you can do on laptops? Seems like a no brainer marketing win imho.
